Laurence Jenkell Biography

Laurence Jenkell is a self-taught contemporary French artist, born on December 31, 1965, in Bourges, France. She has established herself as a significant figure in the world of contemporary art, known for her vibrant and innovative sculptures that often explore themes of consumerism, culture, and identity. Jenkell's journey into the art world is a testament to her relentless pursuit of creativity and her unique ability to transform everyday objects into profound artistic expressions. From a young age, Jenkell was drawn to the arts, but it wasn't until the mid-1990s that she began to seriously explore her artistic talents. Living and working in Vallauris in the Alpes-Maritimes, France, she embarked on a self-directed journey of artistic discovery, experimenting with various techniques and materials. Her explorations led her to master the use of plexiglass, a material that would become a hallmark of her work. Jenkell's artistic breakthrough came with the development of her signature "wrapping twist technique," which she applied to create her iconic Candy sculptures. These larger-than-life sculptures, rendered in bright colors and varying sizes, are made from materials including bronze, plexiglass, aluminum, and marble. The Candy sculptures are more than mere representations of sweet treats; they are a language through which Jenkell communicates ideas of simplicity and universality, touching on themes that resonate across cultures. The concept of the Candy, with its universal appeal and simplicity, became the core of Jenkell's creative identity. However, she did not confine herself to this motif. Her artistic curiosity led her to explore other themes and materials, including the "Wrapping Fridge" and the "Jelly Wrap." Through her work, Jenkell addresses pressing environmental issues, such as the exhaustion of coffee-growing lands, the proliferation of non-biodegradable disposable products, and the poaching of endangered animals. Jenkell's work has achieved international acclaim, with her sculptures being represented in more than 25 countries. Her art is featured in numerous galleries and is part of important private, public, and institutional collections. Notably, Jenkell has participated in significant art fairs and exhibitions, including the Este Arte art fair in Uruguay and the Zonamaco Contemporary Art Fair in Mexico City. Her contributions to the art world have been recognized with honors, such as being knighted as a Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters. Beyond her artistic achievements, Jenkell's journey is marked by her commitment to self-teaching and her ability to carve out a distinct space for herself in the contemporary art scene. Her work, characterized by its playful yet profound exploration of form and color, invites viewers to engage with art in a direct and accessible way. Laurence Jenkell's art is not just a celebration of the aesthetic; it is a bridge that connects the viewer to broader cultural and environmental narratives, making her one of the most compelling artists of her generation.
